Set in 1859 in San Pedro Valley, Arizona, the story unfolds against the backdrop of the Western Front in the lead-up to the American Civil War. San Pedro Valley serves as the central location for the narrative, with all the characters seemingly destined to converge there in the next film. The settlement of "Horizon" is introduced as a promising new land for White Christians, but it is marred by the brutal murder of a man by Apache warriors who seek to drive out the settlers. Despite the challenges posed by the Apaches, the settlement continues to attract new residents.
A massacre drenched in blood unfolds one evening as the indigenous people, under the leadership of the young yet merciless Pionsenay, aim to obliterate the fictional town and anyone who stands in their path. The following day, the Union Army arrives to survey the destruction and question the survivors. First Lieutenant Trent Gephardt takes charge and notifies the supposed residents of Horizon that the land was never rightfully theirs. The motive behind the assault stems from the mere fact that Horizon is located on an Apache river crossing. Disheartened and taken aback by Gephardt's evaluation, the residents disperse. Some set out for vengeance, while others, such as Frances Kittredge and her daughter Lizzie, accompany the Union Army to safety.
The movie's plot description provided above only scratches the surface of its depth, as there is a wealth of content crammed into its three-hour duration. Despite this, it is evident that this installment functions more as an introduction rather than a standalone piece. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 concludes in an inconclusive manner, leaving the connections between its various storylines somewhat ambiguous. Kevin Costner's vision is undeniably grand in scope, yet the lack of resolution in Chapter 1 suggests that the entire project may be better suited for a mini-series format. The narrative introduces numerous characters and their individual subplots, some of which are more captivating than others. Additionally, certain sections are noticeably less engaging than others, resulting in a mixed pacing that transitions from following two inexperienced settlers on a leisurely journey to thrusting viewers into intense confrontations.
